This is a classic techno mix from CJ Bolland at the Ark 2nd Birthday at Leeds Town and Country club on 19th June 1993. Bolland was always really popular in Europe and techno clubs in England, and this is a great example of his style. He was always a favourite at the Orbit, and played a legendary set there almost 3 years to the day later that was one of our favourite ever nights out. If anyone has a copy of that June 1996 set then please get in touch at 88to98@gmail.com

CJ Bolland’s biggest success was to come with the Armand Van Helden remixes of Sugar is Sweeter in 1997.  Personally 88to98 hated this tune and the remixes, and much prefered [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ukbRAgXZYtU?rel=0&w=420&h=315]

  1. I remember this tape fondly as an early primer on techno, along with a slightly earlier set from Frank De Wulf (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Csbul7kDUHg).

Both feature the timeless and, at the time at least, rather mysterious ‘Gravitational Arch of 10’ by Vapourspace (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63dYYZLdodw).

Listening to this one now though, the set seems like a bit of a mess: doesn’t appear to get started until 7:00 and then only really sounds like Bolland until about 26:25. Not sure what happened there but some great memories all the same.
